| Type | Use | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| Zero | General truths, scientific facts | If + present simple, ... present simple |
| First | Real future possibility | If + present simple, ... will + infinitive |
| Second | Hypothetical/unreal present or future | If + past simple, ... would + infinitive |
| Third | Hypothetical/unreal past (regrets) | If + past perfect, ... would have + past participle |
Examples:
- Zero: If you heat water, it boils.
- First: If it rains tomorrow, I will stay home.
- Second: If I won the lottery, I would buy a house. (But I don't expect to win)
- Third: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam. (But I didn't study and I failed)
