Using the Past Simple Tense

The Past Simple tense is used to talk about things that happened and finished at a specific time in the past.

Regular Verbs

Add "-ed" to the base form.

  • work -> worked
  • play -> played
  • visit -> visited

Example: I visited my grandparents last weekend.

Irregular Verbs

These have special forms you must learn.

  • go -> went
  • see -> saw
  • eat -> ate

Example: We went to the cinema yesterday.

Questions and Negatives

For questions and negatives, we use the auxiliary verb "did" + the base form of the main verb.

  • Did you see the movie?
  • She did not (didn't) like the food.
